Joel grew up in a C&MA pastor’s home. He notes, “I look favorably on my growing up years. I never felt the pressure that some pastor’s kids feel; my parents guarded me from that. We had daily family devotions, which consisted of going through Psalms and Proverbs.” These formative experiences of genuine faith helped set the template for life as an adult.
As a teenager, Joel finalized his own faith in Jesus Christ at Delta Lake Conference Center. As a young adult he moved to Franklin TN and began attending Faith Community Church. It was “in church” that he met his wife Lisa. Married in 2002, they are now exploring adoption as a way of building their family and investing in the next generation. The Smythes currently have 2 children, Brandon (3) and Gianna (3).
Joel’s faithfulness in serving the local body pointed to something more. The church recognized a leader in her midst. In January 2013 Joel began serving as an elder. He oversees the the communications ministries. As an elder he is particularly burdened to instill a love of God’s word in the body. Joel’s favorite book of the Bible is Proverbs. There the wisdom of God shines to all who seek him.
Hiking, enjoying nature, and being outside are ways in which Joel enjoys the Lord. He has been an avid hiker for many years. He also enjoys running and exercising.
In addition to the above mentioned things, Joel works as a Graphic Designer. Creative and production design is a passion for him. He began his own business, The Graphics Lab, in May of 2000. He serves small to medium sized companies by offering logo design, web design, brochures, business cards, and more.
